When first setting forth on this extraordinary adventure to co-create a yoga studio that would be 100% funded by class donations, people would always ask the same thing: Can that really work? Our answer was and is always the same: It can definitely work as long as we act together to build a conscious community. And this is what the word Kula actually means, a community or tribe of like-hearted people committed to awakened action.

We have received many questions about how to consciously participate in a donation-funded yoga community. In this spirit, we’d like to take this opportunity to openly communicate and explain to you, our students, how our business model works so that you can contribute mindfully towards the continued surviving & thriving of our sacred space.

Many people have asked if Kula is a nonprofit organization funded by state money, grants, or private donations. The answer to this is no. Kula works just like any other business except for the fact that we invite our students to set their own fair price with a minimum donation of $10 per class to ensure that our teachers and studio are being supported in supporting you.

F.A.Q.'s on donation-funded yoga based on questions we've received:

Q: Are the donations pooled each month and shared equally by all the teachers?
A: No. Each teacher receives a percentage of donations received from their students only in classes they have taught.

Q: Can I purchase a package of classes or a monthly unlimited package?
A: Due to the structure of our business model, we do not offer class packages.

Q: Does yoga by donation mean that I don't have to leave a donation if I choose not to?
A: Unfortunately, our landlord isn't down with this one :). We do require that a minimum $10 payment is made, which not only supports the business and teachers but also establishes a value for the service received and keeps the channels of giving and receiving open.

Q: Should I leave my donation before or after class?
A: Please leave your donation before class when you sign in so that the teacher can remove the donations from the jar before the next class arrives. This will help us avoid confusing which donations go with which class. Studio A classes please sign in at front desk. Studio B & Deck classes please sign in at Buddha Bar.

Q: Do you take any forms of payment other than cash?
A: Yes, you can make your donation via check or credit card as well.




The essence of yoga is the cultivation of mindfulness. We humbly ask that in this spirit you honor the practice etiquette principles set forth below so that we may each contribute to our community consciously and compassionately.



Before Practice

    • Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start of practice so you can sign in, settle in, and take a few quiet minutes on your mat to center yourself.

    • If you are new to the shala, allow a few extra minutes to fill out the new student registration form.

    • Please honor the policy of silence within the practice space before class begins. Conversation is welcomed and teas are offered in the sitting area and garden.

    • Please leave a positive blessing with your donation to support the exchange of energy between teacher and student.

    • Please remember that our teachers rely on your fair and reasonable donation based on the value you place on your practice.

    • Please remove shoes before entering practice room. Cubbies are available for your shoes in the sitting area. Cubbies are offered inside the practice room for personal belongings.

    • Please turn off your cell phone (including the vibrate feature) before entering the practice space.

    • Please introduce yourself to the teacher and notify them of any injuries or precautionary measures before practice begins.

    • Please gather any props needed for the practice beforehand. We are delighted to offer blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters. For hygiene purposes, we encourage you to purchase your own yoga mat.

    • There are a minimal amount of mats available should you be new to the practice. If used, please clean the mat with the mat spray provided when you are finished with practice.

    • Please refrain from wearing any scents in the practice room.

    • Please notify the teacher before class if you prefer to not to have hands-on assists with the postures

During Practice

    • Please remember that during practice, this is your time to reconnect to your truth by honoring your edge, using modifications and props where appropriate, and acknowledging the voice of the teacher within your Self.

    • If you experience pain or discomfort during any practice, please back off and notify the teacher.
      We ask that if you are attending a practice, that you attend the full practice and not leave before its conclusion.


After Practice

    • Please leave the room quietly to honor the stillness of the practice space. Conversation is welcomed & desired in the sitting area, boutique, and garden.

    • Feel free to linger in the sitting area to absorb your practice with a friend, a cup of tea, a book, or the cd listening station.

    • We offer private bodywork treatments that can follow your class such as massage, acupuncture, and Thai yoga therapy.

    • Most of all remember that your practice truly begins the moment you step off the mat, so remember to take it with you!
